"Avengers assemble"
Steve Rodgers/Captain America
March 1941 - April 2007
Captain America was perhaps one of the longest lived heroes in the Marvel Universe. Similar to Wolverine, Cap has lived a long time the but for most of his existence stuck in in a frozen state. Partnered with his sidekick Bucky fought the Nazis and the Red Skull. Later Bucky was killed by Baron Zemo's plot to steal an experimental drone plane equipped with a high powered bomb. When the plane took off, Bucky and Cap made a desperate leap to get on the plane. Cap was unable to to maintain his hold and plummeted to the icy sea. Seconds after Bucky and the plane imploded. Captain America unable to save himself was frozen into suspended animation for years to come. The allied high command kept this a secret and hired other heroes to play the role of Cap and Bucky. Eventually while searching for their foe Namor, the Avengers found him floating in iced over state. They retrieved his body and revived him, Cap was a man out of time, a soldier whose war was long over. Future shocked Cap tried to find a place in this new society. Cap was given an offer to join the Avengers and quickly became the glue that held them together. Cap also helped his old war buddy Nick Fury, now head of SHIELD. It was working as a SHIELD agent that he had met Sharon Carter also known as Agent 13 (who would later unwilling help assassinate him). Sharon was his new love. Cap fought on, struggling to uphold the American Dream and democracy, both alone and partnered with the Avengers-right up until the moment of his death. In his last days Captain America lead a resistance against the Superhuman Registration Act. Declaring it an unjust law, he fought both his country and friends. Once he was captured his long time nemesis the Red Skull saw an opportunity. When Cap was marched in a federal court house, Cross Bones shot him. In the midst of the chaos Sharon Carter ( brainwashed by Dr. Faustus) turned and shot him three times too. Seconds later she tried to tend to his wounds. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. His pallbearers were his friends. Cap left his lifelong legacy to his (thought to be dead) side kick Bucky who was the Winter Soldier after memory tampering from the Soviet Union. In his memory we knew Steve Rodgers as a true American patriot.
I give this hero a four and a half.
